ARV is aiming to divert up to 80% of waste from landfill by 2030 in alignment with the target set by the Victorian government, with significant benefits to the resorts.

Separating organic waste alone will remove up to 50% of resort waste from landfill, which will assist in keeping snow in the resorts by reducing damaging greenhouse gas (methane) emissions.

While recycling levels in resorts are currently good, over 60% of resort mixed recycling is glass, so separating this resource will aid in improved recovery and reuse of this material. ARV is aiming to roll out the necessary infrastructure to improve separation by winter 2024.

The Victorian Government's Kerbside Reform Support Fund is providing assistance to all resorts to help make the necessary changes for collection and transfer systems to facilitate source separation and increase the quantity, quality and value of recyclables.

Sustainability Victoria’s Household Education Fund is providing $20,000 per resort for education programs and collateral to help stakeholders and visitors understand and adjust to the new source separation systems.

This rollout builds on the extensive work that has already been done by resorts to reduce the volume of waste going to landfill, including the introduction of the “Living Bin” program at a number of resorts. The Living Bin program enabled the recycling of organic materials for many years before the current Statewide FOGO bin introduction.

Compostable takeaway coffee cups have also been trialed at several alpine resorts, with many stakeholders keen to expand their use.
