Mountain biking continues to shape the green season across Victoria’s alpine resorts, with new infrastructure upgrades elevating the riding experience at Mt Buller and Falls Creek, and continued support of prominent mountain biking events at Mt Baw Baw and Lake Mountain. By expanding and enhancing purpose-built MTB trail networks, Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) is ensuring the state’s alpine destinations remain home to premier gravity enduro and downhill events — and a key driver of regional tourism, sport development and outdoor adventure.
As part of ARV’s broader strategy to build a vibrant, year-round visitor economy, recreational cycling is increasingly supporting summer visitation within the resorts and across surrounding regional communities. ARV continues to work closely with tourism operators and local businesses to strengthen opportunities across mountain biking, road cycling and gravel riding, creating visitor pathways that encourage longer stays and greater economic activity throughout Victoria’s alpine regions.
Growing demand for outdoor recreation has been strongly supported through Victorian and Australian Government grant funding, enabling significant expansion of trail networks at Mt Buller and Falls Creek in recent years. This investment is driving a coordinated approach to high quality trail development across the resorts and creating new opportunities for regional business growth and nature-based tourism.
Mt Buller: Upgrades, events and world class riding
Mt Buller has delivered major upgrades to its renowned trail network, expanded uplift services, and launched a strong events program designed to attract riders from across Australia. Funding secured through the Victorian Government’s Regional Tourism Investment Fund is enabling continued expansion of Buller’s MTB offering and reinforcing its position as a world class riding destination.
The mountain will again host the AusCycling National Championships for the second consecutive year, bringing elite athletes to compete across cross country and downhill disciplines and further strengthening Buller’s national profile.
Rider access has also improved, with Buller Ski Lifts now operating the Northside Express Chairlift for MTB uplift. Newly installed bike carriers enhance safety and efficiency for gravity riders, complemented by a new shuttle service supporting increased participation and a seamless visitor experience.
Falls Creek: A UCI standard leap forward
Falls Creek is set to open its new UCI spec downhill trail this month — marking Stage Six of its long-term mountain bike park development. This significant addition positions the resort to host national and international events, with the first major competition scheduled as part of the 2026 Victorian Downhill Series on 28 February.
Delivered as one of eight projects funded through the Alpine Business Support Package, the new trail will stimulate visitation, generate new business opportunities and strengthen Falls Creek’s green season tourism offering.
Stage Seven proposes a major expansion of the trail network, with up to 30 km of new singletrack on the resort’s southern slopes. Extending toward Mount McKay, this expansion will open new terrain for riders of all abilities and support additional commercial and event opportunities for the resort and broader region.
A unified commitment to a vibrant summer events calendar
ARV’s continued investment in mountain biking across Mt Buller, Falls Creek and Lake Mountain — alongside its support for the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series — reflects a long-term commitment to delivering high quality alpine experiences that meet the expectations of today’s visitors while inspiring the next generation of riders.
This includes showcasing the important role the resorts play in hosting major state events such as the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series and the Victorian Downhill Series, now iconic fixtures on the Australian MTB calendar. Since its launch in 2013, the Gravity Enduro Series has grown into a dedicated alpine based format spanning the world class parks of Mt Buller, Falls Creek, Lake Mountain and Mystic Park (Bright), bringing significant visitation and economic benefit to surrounding communities and local businesses.
Alpine Resorts Victoria CEO, Amber Gardner notes “Our alpine resorts are leading the way in delivering high quality, trail-based experiences that attract visitors well beyond the snow season. The strength of our mountain biking offering — and the passion of the riders who come here — continues to drive meaningful economic benefit for regional towns, local businesses and tourism operators across the alpine corridor.”
"We’re proud to work alongside partners, communities and government to expand trail networks, enhance ride experiences and support the growing appetite for mountain biking, gravel riding and road cycling. This season’s investments and events not only elevate the visitor experience but also help build a thriving, year-round visitor economy for Victoria’s alpine regions.”
