We actively protect and manage threats to the flora and fauna species that make alpine resorts their home. We protect against the following:

habitat loss
degradation and fragmentation
predation
natural hazards
climate change.

Animal species

Victoria’s alpine resorts are home to many iconic Australian animal species.

Mountain pygmy-possum

Mountain pygmy‑possums are rare alpine mammals reliant on snow and Bogong Moths, threatened by climate change, habitat loss and disturbance, with recovery actions underway.

Broad-toothed rat

Broad‑toothed rats are grass‑eating alpine mammals threatened by predators and habitat loss, with conservation areas being created to support their survival.

Bogong moth

Bogong moths are vital to alpine ecosystems and culture, migrating long distances, but are now endangered after major declines from drought, fire and light pollution.

Guthega skink

Guthega Skinks are rare, long‑lived alpine reptiles found only at high elevations, threatened by climate change, fire and habitat disturbance.

Mountain and barred galaxia

Mountain and barred galaxias are small alpine fish that climb rocks to avoid trout, surviving in isolated upper streams supported by habitat restoration.

Alpine water skink

Alpine water skinks are small, live‑bearing lizards found only in wet alpine bogs and heaths, critically endangered in Victoria due to their limited habitat.

Long-footed potoroo

Long‑footed potoroos are rare, nocturnal marsupials reliant on fungi‑rich, moist forests, with very small, endangered populations in Victoria and NSW.

Spotted-tail quoll

Spotted‑tail quolls are large nocturnal carnivorous marsupials that hunt solo in eastern Australia but face population risk from short lifespans and low breeding success.

Flora displays at the resorts

The resorts also offer easy access to stunning and ever-changing wildflower displays during spring and summer months, including:

Alpine Marsh-marigolds flowering under melting snow and ice
vast carpets of brightly coloured heath species
delicate herbs including Alpine Trigger-plants and stunning Billy-buttons
extraordinary Alpine Sphagnum Bog and Fen communities maintaining water quality and quantities.
