Integrated Water Management (IWM) is a collaborative approach to planning and managing all elements of the water cycle. It considers how water, wastewater and stormwater services can support water security, public health, environmental outcomes and amenity.

In Victoria, IWM represents a shift in how water, land use planning and urban development are understood and delivered. The Victorian Government’s IWM Framework was established in 2017 and created IWM Forums to support coordinated water planning. These forums aim to maintain and enhance the liveability, prosperity and resilience of Victoria’s cities, towns and alpine resorts. Alpine Resorts Victoria supports this approach and is working towards operating its resorts in line with IWM principles.

Delivery of Alpine Resort Integrated Water Management Plans

Water is essential to the alpine environment and to resort operations. Each resort faces increasing pressure on water resources due to declining snowfall, reduced rainfall, higher temperatures and more frequent extreme weather events.

Effective water management is essential for snowmaking, potable water supply, wastewater treatment and stormwater control. To address these challenges, Alpine Resorts Victoria has developed Integrated Water Management Plans (IWMPs) for each resort. The plans provide a consistent, long‑term and sustainable approach to managing water resources.

Each 20‑year plan sets out actions to improve environmental outcomes, water efficiency, water security and infrastructure performance.

The plans also embed Traditional Owner perspectives and identify opportunities for knowledge sharing and culturally informed land and water management. Implementing the IWMPs will support climate resilience, protect catchments and help maintain critical ecosystem services.
