Commercial filming in alpine resorts

Commercial filming in an alpine resort requires a permit, to protect the safety of visitors, operators and the alpine environment. Any filming using a drone also needs to complete a remote piloted aircraft (drone) permit.

Each resort has a unique filming permits process – tailored to the needs of that resort.

Falls Creek

A spectacular alpine destination for television and film production, Falls Creek proudly supports the screen industry and the opportunities it brings to local businesses and the broader community.

To apply for a commercial filming permit please use the commercial filming application form.

Please note there is a 7 day processing period for all applications.

Lake Mountain

Any commercial filming within Lake Mountain Alpine Resort requires a filming permit and can be obtained by emailing Lake Mountain Alpine Resort to start the process.

Mt Baw Baw

Any commercial filming within Mt Baw Baw Alpine Resort requires a filming permit and can be obtained through emailing info.mtbawbaw@alpineresorts.vic.gov.au to start the process.

Mt Buller

ARV Mt Buller should be notified of all commercial filming occurring in resort.

The following activities will require a formal film permit:

  • television productions
  • feature films
  • commercials
  • documentaries
  • music videos
  • business or commercial photography/videography
  • major amateur or student productions that may require exclusive use of an area or pose an environmental risk.

The following activities do not require a film permit, however notice should be provided to ARV via the below application form.

These activities include:

  • news media covering issues on public land
  • amateur filming or photography for personal use
  • most low impact filming activities (less than 6 people, only one camera, no obstruction to public movement or safety, and low likelihood of injury or risk).

To commence the permit process or advise of a filming activity, please email info.mtbuller@alpineresorts.vic.gov.au with your request, including the following information:

  • Purpose and nature of the shoot
  • Date and time of filming
  • Location of filming
  • Contact details for person managing the shoot.

Public liability insurance

Your permit application must include evidence of your public liability insurance, which should include:

  • insurance that covers your liabilities in relation to your filming activities for all film permits
  • proof of certificate of currency to a minimum of $10 million that is relevant to your production
  • the name the Alpine Resorts Victoria Mt Buller – Mt Stirling on the policy.

When a permit is not required, low‑impact filming on public land should still be supported by adequate public liability insurance. This is due to the inherent risks associated with Victoria’s remote and sometimes hazardous alpine environments.

Are there any fees required?

There may be fees incurred depending on the scale of the production and administrative work incurred.

View a brief summary of any possible fees that may be incurred.

Mt Hotham

Commercial filming at Mt Hotham is welcomed but also requires a permit to ensure public and operator safety.

There is no fee required, but the following guidelines must be followed to ensure that all filming aligns with our brand and corporate values, and that resort, visitor safety and amenities are not impacted.

Mt Hotham resort management currently holds a sponsorship agreement with Subaru, therefore will not approve any filming requests from other vehicle brands.

Any company that shoots footage with the Mt Hotham branding for a rival vehicle brand may be subject to ejection from the resort area and a fine, under the Resort Management’s powers as outlined in the Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations 2020, sections 16-17, and 57.

During winter, filming requests that require closure of the Great Alpine Road or traffic management will not be approved:

  • due to the high volume of traffic during the declared winter season
  • the substantially increased safety risk for drivers in the winter weather/environmental conditions.

Anyone breaching this directive may be subject to ejection from the resort area and a fine, under resort management’s powers as outlined in the Alpine Resorts (Management) Regulations 2020, sections 16–17 and 57.

For all other filming requests, please email marketing.mthotham@alpineresorts.vic.gov.au with your request, including the following information:

  • purpose of the shoot
  • benefit to the Mt Hotham Resort
  • date and time of filming
  • location of filming
  • traffic impact if filming in summer (see point 2 above for winter filming)
  • Contact details for person managing the shoot.

Mt Stirling
