About the nursery
The Victorian Alps Nursery is an Indigenous tubestock production nursery operated by Mt Hotham Alpine Resort since 2005. It has established a reputation as a leader in supplying high‑quality, local‑provenance alpine and cold‑climate plants.
Nursery staff have developed significant specialist knowledge of alpine and subalpine species, including identification, propagation methods, growing requirements and revegetation techniques.
Since commencing operations, the nursery has supplied more than 700,000 plants to support revegetation efforts across Victoria and New South Wales alpine regions and valleys within the north‑east catchment area.
Annual sales exceed 50,000 plants, reflecting strong demand for locally sourced alpine and Indigenous species.
As the impacts of climate change become increasingly evident and the need to protect fragile alpine ecosystems grows, demand for the nursery’s specialised services continues to increase each year.
What the nursery offers
The nursery supplies a wide range of Australian alpine species, including ground covers, wildflowers, grasses, trees and shrubs. Servicing north east Victoria, it also grows lowland Indigenous plants for surrounding regions within the Ovens, Kiewa, King and Omeo catchments.
All seed used for propagation is collected by trained nursery staff. The nursery seed bank contains more than 200 species sourced from multiple alpine and lowland provenance areas, including:
- Mt Buller
- Mt Hotham
- Bogong High Plains
- Kosciuszko
- Perisher Valley
- Lake Mountain
- Mt Baw Baw
- Ovens/Kiewa
- Omeo/Benambra
- Upper Murray.
The nursery’s primary focus is to supply quality plants and expert guidance to land managers, private landholders and community groups. This supports successful revegetation projects and the recovery of species diversity in degraded landscapes.
Tailored advice and species recommendations are available to ensure suitable plants are selected for each site. Site consultation services are offered for a fee.
