What is a vehicle permit?

During the declared snow season (King’s Birthday to early October), all vehicles entering an alpine resort must hold a valid permit. The type of permit required depends on your reason for visiting and the vehicle you arrive in. These permits are known as resort entry permits, or parking permits. They might be valid for a day, multiple days or the season.

Why are resort entry fees charged?

Resort entry fees help us to:

Mt Buller

Mt Buller Village Permits

Mt Buller’s village is designed for pedestrians and a small number of vehicles as village permits are limited by the supply of parking bays.  It is possible that demand for village permits will exceed availability. If this occurs, then permits will be allocated as equitably as possible.

ARV’s priority is to provide safe roads, pedestrian walkways, plus allow for effective snow clearing operations. Strict guidelines apply to vehicle permit applications and must be adhered to so as to maintain a functional and visitor-friendly resort.

To be eligible for a Mt Buller village vehicle permit, the site must have designated space (onsite or roadside) as determined by ARV, and the applicant must satisfy one of the following criteria:

  • be an apartment owner
  • be a current Lodge/ Club Member and provide proof if requested
  • be a car park owner
  • operate a business within the village by way of a commercial lease
  • have leased an apartment for entire season and provide supporting paperwork.

The applicant must ensure that the driver of the vehicle has the capability and experience of driving in hazardous conditions that arise from snow and ice on alpine roads.

Applicants are to ensure that the vehicle is fitted with appropriate tyres for snow season driving and that diamond pattern wheel chains are carried at all times.

While applications for 2026 Village Vehicle permits are now closed, any questions can be sent through to parking.mtbuller@alpineresorts.vic.gov.au.

Mt Hotham

As Mt Hotham Alpine Resort operates along the Great Alpine Road, so cars are allowed to transit through the resort without purchasing a resort entry permit, providing they do not stop at any point while in the resort.

ARV Mt Hotham provides a number of permits specific to the winter period for operators and stakeholders. These include oversnow vehicle permits, reserved parking, and complimentary resort entry.

Complimentary resort entry

Businesses with a demonstrated need to move goods or provide services between different worksites within the village during winter may be eligible for a complimentary resort entry permit.

Reserved parking

Limited reserved parking is available during winter for eligible people or businesses. Reserved parking is allocated by ballot. Reserved car parks are not linked to resort entry permits, and any vehicle parked in a reserved car park also requires a valid resort entry permit. Resort entry permits must be purchased separately.
