Thursday 8 January – Fire Danger Ratings
North East Victoria Region that includes Mt Buller/Mt Stirling, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham has been declared an EXTREME Fire Danger Rating.
This means:
- Fires are likely to spread rapidly
- Conditions will be hot, dry and windy
- Fire behaviour may be unpredictable and very dangerous

A TOTAL FIRE BAN has also been declared for:
- Northern Central (Lake)
- North East Victoria (Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham)

Friday 9 January – Significant Fire Risk
Friday is currently forecast to be a day with significant fire risk.
- North Central Region (including Lake Mountain) is rated CATASTROPHIC.
- Lake Mountain will be CLOSED to all staff, stakeholders and visitors on this day.
- North East Region (Mt Buller, Mt Stirling, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham) and West & South Gippsland Region (including Mt Baw Baw) are currently rated EXTREME.
- These areas may approach or reach CATASTROPHIC conditions depending on updates.
A TOTAL FIRE BAN has also been declared for the state of Victoria.
Action Required
- Monitor local updates at Incidents and Warnings - VicEmergency
- All travellers to the alpine region to remain vigilant and stay up to date with local conditions.
- Be aware of heat warnings also in place at lower altitudes.
