Mt Buller Alpine Resort is celebrating a significant milestone, with both of the resort’s key water storages reaching full capacity for the first time since their construction, marking a major achievement in water security and snowmaking readiness.
As the 2026 winter season gets underway, albeit a little slower than everyone would like, both the Boggy Creek Reservoir and Sun Valley Reservoir are full, providing confidence in the resort’s ability to meet both potable water needs and snowmaking demands throughout the season.
This is the first time Mt Buller has entered winter with its reservoirs at full capacity since the newer storage infrastructure was put into operation. The milestone represents a dramatic improvement on previous years.
The Boggy Creek Reservoir was commissioned in 2020 as part of a broader initiative to strengthen Mt Buller’s long-term water resilience. The reservoir holds up to 100 megalitres of water and was designed to enhance supply reliability during periods of peak demand.
The record high storage levels are the result of a combination of favourable weather conditions and proactive infrastructure management. A wetter-than-usual autumn delivered increased inflow to both reservoirs, significantly boosting water availability leading into the snow season. These natural gains were complemented by a targeted works program across the water network, ensuring that more water was retained within the system.
Full reservoirs at the start of winter are particularly important for Mt Buller, where snowmaking plays a vital role in maintaining consistent skiable terrain throughout the season. With water security assured, the resort is well-equipped to respond to variable weather conditions, optimise snow coverage, and enhance the overall visitor experience.
This milestone highlights Alpine Resorts Victoria’s ongoing commitment to sustainable resource management, strategic infrastructure investment and the continuing operational development across Victoria’s alpine resorts.
