Green season in Victoria’s alpine resorts is vibrant and exciting, with a swathe of events hosted across the resorts. These events attracted endurance mountain bikers, long-distance trail runners, fast car and rally car drivers, uphill road and gravel cyclists, Australian music performances, local produce and growers masterclasses and even some snow! It was a green season to remember for all the right reasons.

Falls Creek – FEASTIVAL

In February Falls Creek Alpine Village hosted the 3rd annual FEASTIVAL, delivering an unforgettable weekend of Australian music, gourmet food, art, comedy, and wellness activities.

FEASTIVAL-goers were treated to sunny skies and a relaxing afternoon taking in the breathtaking alpine scenery, sampling local produce and participating in restorative activities. On the main stage was an incredible full day of live music, with The Cat Empire closing out the night on a high note, with dancing, celebrations and wonderful times enjoyed.

Lake Mountain
There were plenty of thrills at Lake Mountain over the summer period with the Australian Tarmac Car Rally and Sprint taking place in February, the Giro della Donna gravel bike riding event taking over the region and resort on a very wet and woolly November day. The Vic Enduro Race combined the thrill of racing downhill on a mountain bike, with the fun of a cross-country trail ride. The best of both worlds!

Mt Baw Baw – Action-Packed Adventures
Mt Baw Baw hosted the Victorian Downhill Series, featuring elite riders taking on the famous double-black diamond trials. Attracting nearly 300 riders from right around the country, this event fills accommodation, camping grounds and has been a local favourite for 10 years. Shortly after, the Snowgum Run Trail Run saw over 100 runners tackle a half marathon, 7km run or a 3km children’s run which traversed some parts of the Mt Baw Baw resort, and also the adjoining national park.

Mt Buller – Mountain Bike Nationals
An exciting week in March saw an adrenaline charged-competition happen at Mt Buller for the GWM Mountain Bike National Championships. Eight hundred of Australia’s top mountain bike riders ascended to Mt Buller to enjoy five days of racing on downhill and cross-country trails while delighting in the beautiful Mt Buller scenery and alpine village during the breaks.  While most of the race happened under big sunny skies, the last day of racing saw wet and cold conditions which made the race to the finish line intense in the wet conditions.

Mt Hotham – Eats at the Peak and the Australia’s Grand Traverse

Mt Hotham hosted its inaugural Eats at the Peak Showcase event in February, where growers and producers gathered together to provide samples, talks and masterclasses with festival-goers. While inclement weather is usually not a highlight, by bringing a bout of fresh snow, it created a memorable first event with a dusting of snow on the ground.

Later in February Hotham also hosted the Australian Grand Traverse competition, with over 160 competitors tackling the Falls Creek to Mt Hotham Alpine Crossing. With the finishing line at the General, there was a fantastic atmosphere and a great sense of accomplishment as the competitors shared their stories over some well-deserved pub grub.
