National Water Week is a reminder of the role water plays in our everyday lives and the need to manage this critical resource carefully.
For Victoria’s alpine resorts, water is fundamental to both the natural environment and resort operations. It supports drinking water supplies, wastewater treatment, stormwater management and snowmaking, while healthy water systems are also important to the alpine environment.
Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) is planning for the long-term management of water across Victoria’s six alpine resorts. ARV has developed Integrated Water Management Plans for each resort, providing a consistent 20-year approach to improving water efficiency, strengthening water security and supporting the performance of essential water infrastructure. The plans also incorporate Traditional Owner perspectives and opportunities for culturally informed land and water management.
This work is particularly important as the alpine sector responds to climate adaptation. Strengthening water security forms part of ARV’s broader approach to climate resilience and long-term environmental stewardship across the resorts.
Investment in the physical infrastructure that supports water supply is another part of this work. Victorian Government funding announced in 2026 included $5 million for essential water assets at Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek, supporting water security and the continued supply of safe potable water.
But good water management is not only about infrastructure and long-term planning. Everyone who lives, works, operates a business or spends time in the resorts can contribute by considering how water is used and where it can be conserved.
Water connects our alpine environment, communities, businesses and visitor experiences.
National Water Week is an opportunity to think about that connection and ask a simple question: how can we use water more wisely in our resorts?
