Collaboration between Alpine Resorts Victoria (ARV) and the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is helping to progress a range of road safety improvements that will benefit visitors, local communities and resort operators.
Earlier this year, ARV facilitated discussions between DTP and the General Managers of Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller to strengthen engagement and identify priority transport and access issues across the resorts. The conversations helped establish direct connections with key transport stakeholders and highlighted opportunities to improve safety and accessibility on alpine roads.
Building on these discussions, DTP representatives visited the resorts with local leadership teams to gain a firsthand understanding of the alpine operating environment and the challenges associated with maintaining safe and efficient access during the snow season.
As a result of this engagement, several priority initiatives are now progressing.
Electronic speed limit signage for alpine resorts
Development funding has been secured for electronic speed limit signage at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek, with strong prospects for construction funding. Subject to approval, the new signage is expected to be installed ahead of the 2027 snow season, providing more responsive speed management and supporting safer travel conditions.
Targeted curve safety improvements
A series of curve safety projects supported through the Motorcycle Safety Levy is progressing along the Great Alpine Road and Bogong High Plains Road. Planned works include upgraded signage, shoulder sealing, improved road delineation and safety barriers. The projects are currently in development, with construction funding to be sought for delivery in a future summer works program.
Landslip prevention works on Bogong High Plains Road
Two landslip prevention projects on Bogong High Plains Road are also being advanced, with matching funding being sought through Disaster Ready Fund Round 4. The proposed works build on recent stabilisation projects and are intended to support the long-term reliability of this key access route to Victoria's alpine region.
These initiatives demonstrate the value of bringing together government agencies and resort leaders to identify shared priorities and drive practical outcomes. Through continued collaboration, ARV and DTP are helping to improve the safety and reliability of the road network that connects visitors and communities to Victoria's alpine resorts.
